Building Validity, Determining Reliability

Your task is to find one source on social media that discusses one “fact” of interest to you.

Your source must present information that supports or refutes the “fact” (e.g., what is the rate and why is this the rate). As you complete the assignment, consider the tools that make evidence valid (a correct fact) and reliable (source is to be trusted). What convinces you of an argument’s validity and reliability? How do you determine if information is fact or opinion?

1. Print a copy of the source, including the information the author uses to make his/her argument (if it is a long article, 2-3 significant pages are enough).

2. Write a one-page review of the source/article. Include:

a. a half-page summary (double spaced) that presents the main points of the source. You should include relevant facts noted in the source (studies, charts, photos, data) and the source of information (who is the author, what is his/her training/background, who is the publisher).

We know that language influences our thoughts, truths, and realities, but the reverse is also true—our thoughts, truths, and realities influence how our language develops and changes.  Because more women are working outside the home than fifty years ago, children’s books written today inevitably account for this in the stories they tell.  Thus, social and cultural reality (that women work outside the home) affects the language used in children’s books (and possibly the way girls will be encultured in the future). 

Further, existing categories in language affect our thoughts, realities, and truths.  Because the English language contains separate terms for the pronouns ‘he,’ ‘she,’ and ‘it,’ we believe that it’s an important distinction to make in when referring to a person (or inanimate object).  Interestingly, the Lakota only designate one term for all three of these pronouns: hé.  Lakota speakers must rely on the context of the sentence to know whether the speaker is referring to a woman, man, animal, or inanimate object.

This assignment involves several parts:

1)    Perform your own fieldwork in at two public locations (or on two different occasions in the same public place), assessing gender specific behavior, language, and nonverbal communication. 

2)    Your group will then give a fifteen minuteclass presentation over these observational findings as they relate to the course reading and film materials.  A detailed grading rubric for this presentation is provided at the end of this document.

3)    After your presentation, your group must hand in an accompanying essay (7-10 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman font, 1” margins), with copies of your field notes. A detailed grading rubric for this presentation is provided at the end of this document.

4)    Finally, your group members will also assess the value of your contributions to the group’s preparation, collaboration, presentation, and finishing (please see the attached peer review evaluation form at the top of this page).

Better yet, attempt at a public relations plan you would have undertaken if you were at the helm. I do not need you to be a PR whizz but what I wish for you to do is to challenge yourself and take on creative, strategic thinking.

Research Report #2: Emerging Issues Analysis and Report


The Entertainment Team (ET — part of Resort Operations at Padgett-Beale, Inc.) is excited about a new event management platform and is ready to go to contract with the vendor. This platform is a cloud-based service that provides end-to-end management for events (conferences, concerts, festivals). The head of Marketing & Media (M&M) is on board and strongly supports the use of this system. M&M believes that the data collection and analysis capabilities of the system will prove extremely valuable for its efforts. Resort Operations (RO) also believes that the technology could be leveraged to provide additional capabilities for managing participation in hotel sponsored “kids programs” and related children-only events. Several other high level managers have expressed concerns however, about one of the capabilities that ET, M&M, and RO are most excited about – customizable RFID wrist bands for managing and tracking attendees.

For an additional fee, the event management platform’s vendor will provide customized RFID bands to be worn by attendees. These bands have unique identifiers embedded in the band that allow tracking of attendees (admittance, where they go within the venue, what they “like,” how long they stay in a given location, etc.). The RFID bands can also be connected to an attendee’s credit card or debit card account and then used by the attendee to make purchases for food, beverages, and souvenirs.

The head of Corporate IT has tentatively given approval for this outsourcing because it leverages cloud-computing capabilities. IT’s approval is very important to supporters of this the acquisition because of the company’s ban on “Shadow IT.” (Only Corporate IT is allowed to issue contracts for information technology related purchases, acquisitions, and outsourcing contracts.) Corporate IT also supports a cloud-based platform since this reduces the amount of infrastructure which IT must support and manage directly.

The project has come to a screeching halt, however, due to a request by the Chief Privacy Officer for more information about the benefits of the RFID system and potential privacy issues. Once more, the management interns have been tapped to help out with a research project. The CPO expects and requires an unbiased analysis of the proposed use cases and the security and privacy issues which could be reasonably expected to arise. The defined use cases are:

1. Children (under the age of 13) attending a hotel sponsored “kids club” program.

2. Individuals attending a music festival or other event where IDs must be checked to establish proof of age (legal requirement for local alcoholic beverage consumption).

6. Using all of your readings, identify at least 5 security and privacy issues which the Chief Privacy Officer needs to consider and address with the Padgett-Beale leadership team as it considers the implications of your chosen use case.

7. Then, identify 5 best practices that you can recommend to Padgett-Beale’s leadership team to reduce and/or manage risks associated with the security and privacy of data associated with the event management platform.


Write a three to five page report using your research. At a minimum, your report must include the following:

1. An introduction or overview of event management systems and the potential security and privacy concerns which could arise when implementing this technology. This introduction should be suitable for an executive audience. Provide a brief explanation as to why three major operating units believe the company needs this capability.

2. An analysis section in which you address the following:

a. Identify and describe your chosen Use Case

b. Identify and describe five or more types of personal / private information or data that will be collected, stored, processed, and transmitted in conjunction with the use case.

c. Analyze and discuss five or more privacy and security issues related to the use case.

d. Identify and discuss 3 or more relevant laws which could impact the planned implementation of the event management system with RFID wrist bands.

3. A recommendations section in which you identify and discuss five or more best practices for security and privacy that should be implemented before the technology is put into use by the company. Include at least one recommendation in each of the following categories: people, processes, policies, and technologies.

4. A closing section (summary) in which you summarize the issues related to your chosen use case and the event management platform overall. Include a summary of your recommendations to Padgett-Beale leadership.

User Interface Design (Create A Video)

Review two user interfaces that you encounter in daily life. 

  1. One of them should be a software interface (library application, a gaming interface, banking software etc.)
  2. The other should be an ordinary object, not a software (phone, TV, printer, ATM, vending machine, etc.)
  3. Pick a specific software and an object, not a category. Not just a phone, a specific model (Samsung Galaxy S9 for example). You can take a picture of the object and add to your assignment. I would strongly suggest to add an image.
  4. Pick an item that has some complexity to it. Not a hairdryer with a single on/off button. It does not have to be extremely complicated either.
  5. Explain the positive and negative aspects of the interfaces. Be descriptive. Not just, it is hard to use or I really like the button. What could be done to improve usability? What makes it hard to use? Does it require training to use?

You will produce a video review for this assignment. Keep your video review under 15 minutes.

      In my example I will be the CIO for Healthy Hospital; standard metropolitan area hospital. We are looking to implement a Home Health program to eliminate unnecessary visits. Patients will take their blood pressures, glucose, temperatures, etc. on their own or with assistance of a home health aide and all results will be electronically transmitted to hospital where it will be processed, inspected, monitored and become part of the patient’s health record.

      The systems development life cycle (SDLC), while undergoing numerous changes to its name and related components over the years, has remained a steadfast and reliable approach to software development (McMurtrey, Winter 2013). First an analysis will need to be done. The submission of this project requisition from a department for the development, modification or purchase of an information system will be set in place (Sayles, 2013). The request typically includes an overview of the system purpose, desired functions, anticipated benefits, and costs (Sayles, 2013). Questions I would ask would be: Do we have the necessary resources and infrastructure to support the software if it is acquired (McMurtrey, 2013)? Do we have the financial resources to pay for it, including support and maintenance? Do we have properly trained individuals who can operate and use the software? What are the user’s needs for this system and can we address all of these needs? Will there be any legal issues?

      We would design and build an appropriate software product and also issue Lifeline buttons to the elderly patients (especially those who live alone). Look into vendors, available programs, competency, and cost (McMurtrey, 2013). Maybe look for a vendor who will prototype so we can see the completed outcome – pros and cons. I would ask: How do the users interact with the system? What should the user interfaces look like? How do the data identified for the IS relate to each other? What are the logical and physical data models for this project? Will the system be user friendly for those who have little to no healthcare experience – customer/patient friendly? Next we would need to implement the software, train staff, and set a go live date.

Task Force Project—Applying Theory

In Module 1, you began your work as the head of the  Maternal, Infant, and Reproductive Health Task Force in Centervale. You  did this by learning more about adolescent pregnancy and the behavioral,  cultural, and environmental risk factors associated with this health  issue. In this assignment, your attention turns to community issues.  Your task force has representatives from several community  organizations. You know that in addition to your focus on an  individual-level change, you will need to provide the group with  information about community-level change to impact the adolescent  pregnancy issue in Centervale.

  1. Read the editorial entitled “Community-based Intervention” in which  the authors recommend four typologies or approaches to community-based  projects (McLeroy, Norton, Kegler, Burdine, & Sumaya, 2003).  Consider how each of these typologies might be applicable to adolescent  pregnancy prevention in Centervale.
